PLAYBOOK 03 · MARKETING

The agency says leads are up. Which car?

The report says cost per lead went down. The owner wants to know which car the lead was on and whether that car sold. DealerCortex reads the store's Google Ads and analytics per VIN and puts them on the same screen as the inventory they are supposed to move.

The problem

Marketing is measured in a different room from inventory. The agency reports clicks, cost per click, cost per lead and a month-over-month arrow. The used-car manager measures days in stock and gross. Nobody connects the two, so the store can spend $140 pushing a car that nobody will buy at that price and $30 on a car that would have sold anyway, and both numbers look fine on the report.

The owner's real questions never get asked because no report can answer them. Which cars got the spend? Did the traffic reach the aged units or the fresh ones? Which lead came in on which car, and did the car sell? What is the market pulling toward in our radius, before we go buy more of what it is not?

Google Ads board: spend, clicks, calls and leads by VIN

What it costs

  • Spend on the wrong cars. Campaigns optimized for clicks push the cars that get clicks, not the cars that need to move.
  • The invisible unit. A car with zero listing traffic for two weeks, which no amount of price cutting can fix, and which nobody flagged because traffic is not on the inventory screen.
  • Attribution by argument. The agency says the lead was theirs. The CRM says it was organic. The car sold and nobody learned anything.
  • Buying blind to demand. The store restocks what it sold, not what the market in its radius is searching for right now.

How DealerCortex handles it

The Google Ads board. DealerCortex connects to the store's Google Ads account and reads it per VIN: spend, clicks, calls and leads by car. $140 spent on a car with no traffic sits next to $30 on a car that sold in six days. The owner can see it, and so can the agency.

VDP traffic by day. On every car page, the listing's daily views sit next to its price moves and its leads. The cut and its effect are on one line. A car with no traffic is flagged as a visibility problem, not a price problem.

Buyer Gravity and demand tiers. Which models and price points the market is pulling toward in the store's radius, measured from search volume and listing velocity, before the store buys them. Marketing and buying read the same demand signal.

Local SEO. Where the store ranks for the searches that matter in its own zip codes, tracked over time, so "we need more traffic" becomes "we lost the first page for used trucks in our county."

The store keeps its agency. DealerCortex does not require firing anyone. What changes is that the agency's numbers now sit on the same screen as the inventory they are supposed to move, and the owner can hold them to the car.

WHAT THE OWNER SEES

Spend, traffic and leads on the car page. A list of units with no visibility. A demand map of the radius. One screen where the marketing conversation and the inventory conversation are the same conversation.

What changes in the first 30 days

Google Ads and analytics connect on day one with the store's own credentials. The first weekly review of the Ads board usually finds the same two things: spend concentrated on cars that did not need it, and a handful of units with no traffic at all. Both get fixed the same week.
